This dance production brings together dancers, actors, musicians, artistes from across the Globe. This collaborative work thrives on cultural exchange and connects tradition to modern, contemporary expression leading to a futuristic, urbanistic coexistence, dance language and story-telling.

“Belleville” is a neighbourhood of Paris, which was once an independent commune (municipality) annexed to the city of Paris, France in 1860. ‘Belleville’ literally means ‘Beautiful Town’, much in its sophistication. Historically, Belleville was a ‘working class’ neighbourhood, where immigrants like German Jews, Tunisian Jews, Spaniards, Algerians, etc. started settling down. This place became the harbour for several cultures and traditions, though it belonged to the lower rung of people who came in search of ‘home’. This area was also ignored during architectural modernisations and reparations in France during 1860/70s. Thus lies the irony of the much fabricated and sophisticated, dreamland of ‘Belleville’.

Today Belleville is a colourful multi-ethnic neighbourhood, where people of varied and mixed cultures co-exist and share space and their lives. This dance piece tries to derive its inspiration from this place where cultures meet and inter-connect. It’s a collage of images or photos of people living in different parts of the world and then putting it together in one space or one picture. It involves traditional, folk, street dance forms juxtaposed in a contemporary and rapidly progressing global scenario and dance vocabulary, where people are looking towards a “Belleville” future of peaceful co-existence.

The piece was premiered again on the 14th of January,2016 and was followed by seven more shows over a period of two months, January and February, 2016. While her stay in Germany, she along with 5 other dancers who came through the Goethe Institute were invited to create self-choreographies to perform for the ending ceremony of the Shwankhalle Theater Festival in 2015,an evening of guest dancers from Theater Bremen, “Let’s Call It A Night“.

Watch “Let’s Call It A Night“ video here.

Ronita performing in ‘Thinking Inside the Box’.

Ronita created her piece “Thinking Inside the Box” which was based on her present situation both physically and mentally in Germany during her stay for 6 months. It was about her internal conflict merged with her external state of mind in a country far away from hers and the neuromuscular reaction to her emotional state at that time, being translated into physical expression through contemporary dance vocabulary. She self explores her journey by delving deep into her internal conflicts between her mind and soul and the various effects of being in a different state of being in a different land from her own.The several conversations that take place and the several relationships that develop in the journey – the vast space of being and meeting people at different times yet feeling so confined,as if almost in a box. The Music was composed by Martin Bassman, a German musician who collects text from the dancer/dancers and then merges it with a music palate of words, electronics, histrionics and music from India. The dance piece involved three other dances, Keya Ann D’souza(India), Igor Anuitin (Russia) and Kseniya Zhukova( Russia) besides her own self.

Watch “Thinking Inside The Box” video here.

South Korea Project 2015

Ronita at the workshop in South Korea.

Ronita was selected to participate in the 2015 Asia Dance Workshop hosted by The Asia Culture Centre of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Republic of Korea as the 2015 project of the Asia Dance Committee. Hence the struggle and constant search for balance and the calm. by Atalya Baumer and Tamar Mayzlish (Israel & India collaboration)

“End of the Wall” demonstrates two groups of dancers from two different countries – Israel and India- searching for the best way to communicate and work together despite mental, cultural and physical barriers. The performance takes place on two different stages – one in Israel and one in India – at the same time. The dancers are communicating through the Skype format – which is projected on the back wall of the stage. An illusion of one stage occurs and mutual time and space are created. The dancers find ways to get to know each other and communicate with each other beyond the mental, cultural, and geographical walls between them.

This unique screening format creates a “duplication” of the events which happen in both sides – sort of an image inside an image and so on – which dismisses the dimension of time and creates an illusion of endlessness. at times, we might feel that all the performers are in one physical space.

The usage of the Skype technology – as the first tool of breaking the existing barriers- helps in creating the relationship between the performers and That, eventually, brings up similarities between artists from different backgrounds, different traditional countries, religions, communities and minorities.

This is a one hour Contemporary Dance Production which is an Indo-Israeli collaboration Choreographed by Atalya Baumer and Tamar Mayzlish (Israel) which took place simultaneously in Bangalore, India and Bat Yam, Israel.

The work went through a year and half of process and premiered in Alliance Francaise, Bangalore and simultaneously in Kelim Choreography Centre in Bat Yam, Israel. The evening saw 2 back to back performances in India and Israel over Skype and was a major success. Ronita was one of the 4 Indian Dancers and 2 Israeli dancers that performed. personal stories about hair on the one hand, and fantastical explorations of these stories on another. The performance draws upon personal, historical, political and gender narratives of the hair. It employs humour, playfulness, and fantasy to unpack questions of identity, androgyny, gendered beauty, and the way these ideas relate to each other across cultures.

“A Brief History of Your Hair” has been made possible by a grant from India Foundation for the Arts, and The New Voices Arts Project. The work towards this performance was initiated in 2015 as part of Gender Bender, a joint initiative by Sandbox Collective and Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore. The extreme thoughts and actions that generate in this journey of being in a relationship is explored by the dancers who use flashback of memories and visual images that form the base of generating movement vocabulary and improvisational story boards. Some of the movements, or a visual stimulation or a deep rooted emotional impulse that translates in the vocabulary performed at the given time that only taste in that movements. Davies

Performed by Ronita Mookerji & Gaby Davies

This piece was generated as a conversation that evolved between two girls, one who lives in the small island of Malta in Europe and one who has had a childhood in a small town in the Hills of India. With a longing desire of creating work together, but being unable to travel to one another, the conversations naturally passed onto virtual mediums in order to the sustain the continuity of the project.

Whilst both confined in our rooms during the quarantine period, the number of video calls and discussions rose which eventually led, to what we call, ‘Quarantine Nights’ – a series of recorded improvisation sessions which were held within restrictive space during the awkward hours of the night. The work that we will be presenting does not necessary represent two individuals in quarantine, but rather, we have utilised some aspects that arose during this time as inspirational tools – those awkward and disturbing dreams, that lethargic or hyperactive feeling of moving at 1am, the increase of introverted characteristics, yet the despair of not being able to socialise, to travel, to move with others, to feel the sense of touch – this whole reflux of containment and quarantine was hence further exploited and explored over dead nights, white noise, and the sounds of silence.

Watch “Let’s Call It A Night” video here.

Meeting in India, but living in two different continents, growing up in two different cultural backgrounds, the two dancers come together through the expressive form of contemporary dance with one question in common – a question as simple and complex as existential crisis and future unfolding, the uncertainty of present times and the situation of total and uncontrollable dystopia. The work challenges notions of uncertainty and the pathway of the unknown, the adverse effect of self-isolation and loss of time and reality yet finding a sense of togetherness and unification through the arts, even during moments of solitude.

Exact Duration : 7mins and 58 secs
Performed on 13th Agust, 2020
Credits: Music Composition – Nikhil Nagaraj / Shaun Downey / Kevin Macleod
Music & Video Editing – Gaby Davies

International Sanskar Virtual Performance Festival Edition 1, 2020

Devised by Ronita Mookerji & Gaby Davies

Performed by Ronita Mookerji

SANSKAR redefines performing arts in times of a pandemic: While the world seems inextricably interconnected online as never before, art and its value needs to be put into a new virtual context. 75 performing choreographers from all over the world create dance pieces in this unique online performance festival.
